Evidence for near-source nonlinear propagation of volcano infrasound from Strombolian explosions at Yasur Volcano, Vanuatu

چکیده
Abstract Volcanic eruption source parameters may be estimated from acoustic pressure recordings dominant at infrasonic frequencies (< 20 Hz), yet uncertainties high due in part to poorly understood propagation dynamics. Linear of volcano infrasound is commonly assumed, but nonlinear processes such as wave steepening distort waveforms and obscure the sourcing process recorded waveforms. Here we use a previously developed frequency-domain nonlinearity indicator quantify spectral changes primarily 80 signals explosions Yasur Volcano, Vanuatu. We find evidence for $$\le$$ ? 10 ?3 dB/m energy transfer band 3–9 Hz with amplitude on order several hundred Pa 200–400 m range. The clarity signature increases waveform amplitude, suggesting stronger greater pressures. observe similar results application synthetics generated through finite-difference wavefield simulations propagation, although limitations model complicate direct comparison observations. Characterization of moderate ash‐and‐gas explosions at Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, from infrasound waveform inversion and thermal infrared measurements
The rapid discharge of gas and rock fragments during volcanic eruptions generates acoustic infrasound. Here we present results from the inversion of infrasound signals associated with small and moderate gas-and-ash explosions at Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, to retrieve the time history of mass eruption rate at the vent. Acoustic waveform inversion is complemented by analyses of thermal infra...
متن کاملModeling Strombolian eruptions of Karymsky volcano, Kamchatka, Russia
A model is proposed to explain temporal patterns of activity in a class of periodically exploding Stromboliantype andesite volcanoes. These patterns include major events (explosions) which occur every 3^30 min and subsequent tremor with a typical period of 1 s. This two-periodic activity is thought to be caused by two distinct mechanisms of accumulation of the elastic energy in the moving magma...

Evidence for Recent Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions at Damavand Volcano, Iran with Implications for Volcanic Hazards
Damavand is a large dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran located in one of the most populous provinces, which could be adversely affected by tephra fall from Damavand. The youngest known eruption is a lava flow on the western flanks with an age of 7.3 ka. The volcanic products are predominantly porphyritic trachyandesite. Three major young pumice deposits, named here a...
